Second Grade Gifted & Talented Screening
BCSD will conduct its annual Gifted & Talented (GT) screening for all second-grade students October 5–9, 2026. Students will complete the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) and Iowa Assessments (IA) over five days, with testing beginning at 9:00 a.m. each morning.
Please help your child have a successful testing experience by:
Making sure your child arrives at school on time each day.
Avoiding appointments during the testing period when possible.
Ensuring your child gets a good night's sleep and eats a healthy breakfast.
Keeping normal routines at home throughout the testing period.
No special preparation is required! Please remember that this screening is one part of BCSD's ongoing GT identification process. Students may also be considered for GT identification through SC READY and i-Ready assessment data throughout the school year.
GT screening results will be sent home with families in January. For more information about South Carolina's Grade 2 GT screening process, please visit the South Carolina Department of Education's Gifted & Talented page.

STEP Audition Registration is now open!
Berkeley County's Gifted and Talented Arts Program is available to students of Berkeley County Public Schools between the 4th and 12th grade who have auditioned and are identified as gifted/talented in dance, music, theatre, and visual arts. Once identified, students may attend seven Saturday STEP opportunities at a school throughout the district during the school year and a two-week summer program. Sixth through eighth grade STEP students may also attend Marrington Middle School of the Arts.
To qualify for STEP, students must either audition before a jury composed of fine arts professionals (theatre, music, and dance) or must complete on-site visual arts assignments. In addition, students are given tests that are indicators of potential in the various art disciplines. The jury seeks to identify students with outstanding potential in the arts.
Auditions are open from now until November 30, 2026. We would love to see a great turnout for STEP Auditions this year. Above is the description letter, which includes the link and a scannable QR Code.

The 2026 Lowcountry Service Academy Day will be held on Saturday, September 19, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at The Citadel’s Bastin Hall.
This event is an excellent opportunity for students and their families to learn more about the U.S. service academies and ask questions prior to application deadlines. There is no age restriction for attendance to this information session, but students in the seventh grade and above will find this most applicable.
A service academy education provides students with a four-year college degree, extensive professional and leadership development, and a pathway to serve our country as a commissioned officer. The value of a service academy appointment can be equivalent to a $350,000–$450,000 scholarship.
We would greatly appreciate your help sharing this opportunity with the students and families in your community who may be interested in pursuing an education and career through one of our nation’s service academies.

Our September Mock Renaissance Rally will focus on connection, expectations, and Loggerhead spirit! Wear red, white, and blue as we come together as a CLS community to honor and remember 9/11. During the rally, students and staff will:
Review our school-wide expectations and WAVE values
Check in with their grade level and celebrate their progress
Participate in rally games and activities
Learn about the launch of our PBIS Rewards System
