BCSD will conduct Gifted & Talented Academic (GTA) screening for students who have been referred by a parent, teacher, and/or administrator. Families do not need to take any action at this time. The district will provide Carolyn Lewis School with the list of students selected for CogAT testing, and individual letters will be sent home to families of students who are identified for testing.
At Carolyn Lewis School, CogAT testing will take place during the regular school day on:
Grades 3–5: October 20 & 21
Grades 6–8: October 22
The CogAT measures students' reasoning abilities and is one component of South Carolina's GT identification process. No special preparation is required. Families are encouraged to ensure students get a good night's sleep and eat breakfast on testing days.
📌 Important: The district is expected to provide the list of students scheduled for testing on October 1. Once the list is received, specific families will be notified with additional information.

We were incredibly fortunate to welcome a very special guest speaker, Mr. Young to Mrs. Geyer's 7th ELA classes earlier this week! As her classes studied Flesh & Blood So Cheap: The Triangle Fire and Its Legacy, our students had the opportunity to hear from a retired firefighter who shared his experiences, knowledge, and perspective on the importance of fire safety, service, and helping others. His visit brought learning to life and gave students a meaningful connection to a difficult but important piece of history. Beyond the lesson itself, he served as a wonderful example of courage, compassion, dedication, and what it means to serve your community.

The BCSD School Social Worker Team will host a virtual Parent and Community Night, tomorrow, September 29 through our partnership with Sources of Strength. Sources of Strength is a best-practice, evidence-based suicide prevention and mental health promotion program.
The focus of the evening will be helping parents, caregivers, and community members understand the importance of being trusted adults in the lives of children and youth. Participants will learn strategies for strengthening connections, building protective factors, and helping prevent adverse outcomes. This virtual event is an important part of our continued efforts to engage and equip families and community partners in supporting the well-being of our students. There will also be prizes for parents and community members who participate!

Please help your child have a successful testing experience by:
Making sure your child arrives at school on time each day.
Avoiding appointments during the testing period when possible.
Ensuring your child gets a good night's sleep and eats a healthy breakfast.
Keeping normal routines at home throughout the testing period.
No special preparation is required! Please remember that this screening is one part of BCSD's ongoing GT identification process. Students may also be considered for GT identification through SC READY and i-Ready assessment data throughout the school year.

STEP Audition Registration is now open!
Berkeley County's Gifted and Talented Arts Program is available to students of Berkeley County Public Schools between the 4th and 12th grade who have auditioned and are identified as gifted/talented in dance, music, theatre, and visual arts. Once identified, students may attend seven Saturday STEP opportunities at a school throughout the district during the school year and a two-week summer program. Sixth through eighth grade STEP students may also attend Marrington Middle School of the Arts.
To qualify for STEP, students must either audition before a jury composed of fine arts professionals (theatre, music, and dance) or must complete on-site visual arts assignments. In addition, students are given tests that are indicators of potential in the various art disciplines. The jury seeks to identify students with outstanding potential in the arts.
Auditions are open from now until November 30, 2026. We would love to see a great turnout for STEP Auditions this year. Above is the description letter, which includes the link and a scannable QR Code.
