We want to share an important update regarding Gifted & Talented (GT) identification and class placement for students in grades 6–8:
As we reviewed our GT student information and class placements, we identified a need to make adjustments to ensure that student schedules and GT placements accurately reflect current South Carolina and district requirements.
Under the state’s GT identification criteria, state-identified GT students are required to receive GT services and are given priority for placement in GT classes. Locally identified students are reviewed annually and are not guaranteed placement in a GT class from one school year to the next. As a result, some students who were initially placed in a GT class under local identification, required a schedule adjustment to ensure that state-identified students receive the required services. they are required to receive.
We recognize that schedule changes after Meet the Teacher can be frustrating for students and families, and we sincerely appreciate your patience as we work through this process. Our school is still actively working with district officials to review placements and develop solutions that minimize the impact on students while ensuring that we meet all state and district requirements.
We will also be providing families with additional information about GT identification criteria, state and local identification, placement procedures, and the annual review process. We believe it is important for families to have a clear understanding of how GT identification and placement work, as this may not have been made clear previously.
Because individual schedule adjustments require careful review, we ask for your patience as we work through each situation. If your student requires an additional schedule change, our school will contact you directly if and when that change occurs.
Please be assured that our goal is to make this process as smooth as possible for our students and families. We are committed to ensuring that our GT identification and placement procedures are accurate, consistent, and aligned with state and district expectations moving forward.
Thank you for your patience, understanding, and partnership as we makes waves and lead forward through these adjustments.
