Exciting updates are coming to Berkeley High and Goose Creek High as Berkeley County School District (BCSD) begins expansion and modernization projects funded by the Educational Capital Improvements Sales and Use Tax (penny tax) approved by Berkeley County voters in November 2022.
As part of the first phase of construction, families and community members will begin seeing temporary, modular classroom buildings arrive on both campuses this summer. These modular learning spaces are an essential part of the construction process, allowing students and teachers to continue teaching and learning without disruption while demolition and construction activities take place.
“These projects represent continued investment in the futures of our students, staff and communities,” said Superintendent Dr. Anthony Dixon. “The temporary modular classrooms are an important step in delivering modern, expanded learning spaces that will serve students for decades to come.”
Berkeley High School Project
The Berkeley High School project will replace an aging annex building that originally dates back to 1964.
The new two-story academic building will provide more than 41,000 square feet of modern instructional space and will include:
27 classrooms
Two art rooms
One drama room
A resource room
Administrative and support spaces
When complete, Berkeley High School will gain a net increase of 15 classrooms, helping the school better support current and future enrollment while providing students and teachers with updated learning environments designed for today's educational needs.
To support instruction during construction, temporary modular classroom buildings containing 16 classrooms and office space will be installed on campus.
Goose Creek High School Project
At Goose Creek High School, the project will replace the aging 300 Wing, originally constructed in 1968.
The new two-story facility will provide nearly 41,000 square feet of instructional space and will include:
30 classrooms
Four computer labs
Three earth science laboratories
Teacher workrooms
Administrative offices
Student and staff restrooms
The project will significantly enhance instructional capacity while creating modern spaces that support science education, technology integration, and collaborative learning opportunities.
Temporary modular classroom buildings containing 16 classrooms will be installed to ensure students remain in uninterrupted learning environments throughout construction.
Modular classroom installation and site preparation has begun at both school sites. Demolition and construction are scheduled to start in the fall of 2026, with both projects expected to be completed by December 2027.
While students and families will notice construction activity on campus, BCSD is committed to maintaining safe, accessible, and effective learning environments throughout the process.
“These projects are part of our ongoing commitment to provide high quality educational facilities while being good stewards of taxpayer funding,” Dixon added. “We look forward to sharing construction updates and celebrating milestones as these projects move forward.”
