HMS topping off gathering

Berkeley County School District celebrated another big construction milestone on Thursday when district and construction officials came together to "top off" the new Hanahan Middle building.

Topping off ceremonies recognize the placement of the final beam at the highest point of a new building. Hanahan Middle’s new “look” is being constructed where the former building previously stood off of Murray Drive. It is slated to open its doors to students in August 2026. Construction is being managed by H.G. Reynolds Company. VIEW PHOTOS.

Representatives from the district and H.G. Reynolds Company took turns writing their names – as well as well wishes – onto the beam before a crane lifted it up and placed it on the roof of the building, with the help of some “Hawks” who made sure the beam was safely installed.
