Saturday was all about building connections and finding ways to support students in their learning -- even beyond the classroom.
The 2025 Family Engagement Summit event was held April 26 at Carolyn Lewis School to provide district information and community resources to visiting families.
This is the second year Berkeley County School District's Office of Federal Programs has hosted this event. BCSD officials invited local organizations and community groups to come and set up tables and participate in information sessions to really engage with families and provide some hands-on activities for students. Students loaded up a number of table giveaway items and merchandise, plus some school supplies to get them ready for the next school year.
This was the new date for the Family Engagement Summit after the 2025 event was rescheduled in January because of inclement weather. Table and session participants pivoted a little bit to make this past weekend's event focus more on supporting students in their education
A very popular part of Saturday morning was a presentation by invited keynote speaker, Dr. Kimberly P. Johnson, a children's author and educator who is currently a faculty member at Clemson University. Johnson got families involved in a very engaging, hands-on activity that centered on personal growth, attitude, overcoming obstacles and overall community support.
