Hanahan Middle School underwent an extensive renovation to better serve the students and families in the Hanahan community. Hanahan Middle's classrooms, administration area, gym and science wing were demolished to rebuild 82,000 sq ft. of HMS alongside what remained of the existing campus. The Berkeley County School District broke ground on the project in March 2025 and cut the ribbon on the facility in May 2026. It will open its doors again to students in August 2026.

The Berkeley County Board of Education met on August 9, 2022 and passed a resolution to place a one-percent sales tax on the November 2022 ballots of Berkeley County voters. The resolution was passed by Berkeley County voters with a 70 percent approval rate. It is now in place for seven calendar years, ending on December 31, 2029.

Commonly identified as a "penny tax," the one-percent tax is an Education Capital Improvements Sales and Use Tax. The Educational Capital Improvements Sales and Use Tax Act authorizes qualifying school districts in South Carolina to impose a one-percent sales tax for specific capital improvement projects.
