School counselors amplify student success! National School Counseling Week 2026 (Feb. 2-6), sponsored by the American School Counselor Association, highlights the essential contribution of school counselors to a school system. Every student deserves a school counselor to help with academic achievement strategies, managing emotions, applying interpersonal skills and planning for postsecondary options. Be sure to thank a school counselor this week for everything they do to support their school and students! #NSCW26 #makingapositivedifference

Hello, SFM Families and Guardians, As we return tomorrow, please use caution on campus, as some shaded areas may still have patches of ice. Please also ensure your student brings their device back to school. I’m looking forward to welcoming our wonderful students and getting back into our routine together. Stay warm and take care, Dr. Cowan

Hello SFM Parents and Guardians, Due to concerns about icy conditions, Berkeley County School District students will learn from home and complete eLearning Day assignments on Monday, February 2. All schools and offices will remain closed on Monday. Staff will work remotely. Students will complete eLearning assignments from home via Schoology or SeeSaw. Specific information about assignments will be provided by the student’s teacher and/or school. Teachers will share information regarding their office hours to support students completing eLearning assignments at home. Parents and students can refer to the eLearning Day FAQs for more details. All before and after school programs, extracurricular activities, athletic events—including practices and games— and special events are canceled Monday, February 2. BCSD works closely with Berkeley County Emergency Management and receives regular updates from the National Weather Service to monitor conditions. District leadership plans to resume normal operations on Tuesday, February 3, but may make further adjustments to school operations if necessary. For additional updates, please visit the BCSD website and/or mobile app. Dr. Cowan

Hello SFM Parents and Guardians,

“Student access to SC Discus, South Carolina's Virtual Library, was temporarily restricted in February in response to parent concerns regarding age-appropriate content. This step was taken in accordance with S.C. Code Regs. § 43-170, which requires school districts to ensure digital and print resources meet educational and age-appropriateness standards.

District leadership collaborated with key stakeholders, including the South Carolina Department of Education and the South Carolina State Library, to conduct a review of SC Discus. As a result, access to SC Discus was restored on high school student devices prior to the start of the school year. The district has also determined that SC Discus will be available on middle school student devices beginning on January 15, 2026.

If you do not want your student to use SC Discus, please complete, sign, and return the opt out form to your child’s librarian.

If you approve your child’s access and use of SC Discus on their BCSD issued device, no action is required.”

Dear SFM Parents and Guardians, We are asking for your support in helping us reduce distractions caused by Beats headphones, wireless AirPods, and cell phones during the school day. These items have increasingly become distractions in hallways and during instructional time for our teachers, and we have seen an uptick in referrals related to their use. Students are permitted to have wired headphones. Please encourage your student to leave Wireless Beats headphones at home, or at the very least, keep them secured in their book bags. Additionally, all cell phones should be turned off and kept in book bags until the end of the school day. We appreciate your partnership as we work together to maintain a focused, safe, and productive learning environment for all students. Thank you for your continued support. Sincerely, Dr. Cowan
