Hello, SFM Families and Guardians,
I hope you enjoyed your weekend. I am writing to address a concerning increase in students using cell phones to cheat on assignments and assessments.
Students are expected to follow our cell phone policy and complete their own work. Using a phone to cheat compromises the integrity of an assessment and prevents teachers from seeing what a student has learned and where they need support. We will not tolerate this behavior. Moving forward, any student found using a phone to cheat will face consequences in accordance with school and district policies.
Our teachers work hard to prepare students for success in ELA, math, science, social studies, and the next grade level. I will discuss this concern further during Coffee and Conversation.
Parents and guardians, please have an intentional conversation with your student about following the cell phone policy, doing their own work, and building strong character and work habits. Thank you for your partnership and support.

If you have not provided a South Carolina immunization record to Nurse Coefield, please do so by Friday. If your 7th grader has not received their Tdap vaccine, please schedule an appointment to get it. Send the appointment confirmation to the nurse (coefieldb@bcsdschools.net). We will send letters home this week for students who do not meet grade-level immunization requirements, according to our records. Please update your child's record as soon as possible to avoid missed school time.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
I am writing to follow up regarding our chorus/music class and clarify information students received this week about a staffing change affecting the course. I have been out of the office, which contributed to the delay in communicating with families, and I apologize that you did not hear directly from me sooner.
Our intent was to allow the teacher to speak with students about the staffing change before we followed up with families. Because that conversation occurred while I was out of the office, families did not yet have the full context regarding the staffing decision or our plan for the course moving forward. I understand why that caused concern, particularly if students came home believing they were losing their course or access to arts instruction. They are not.
As we review enrollment and student course requests, staffing allocations sometimes have to be adjusted to reflect the number of students enrolled in particular courses and programs. There are currently 21 students enrolled in chorus/music. Based on overall enrollment and student course requests, the full-time teaching allocation associated with this position is being transferred to another school where enrollment supports the need for a full-time position.
That staffing change does not eliminate the course or our responsibility to the 21 students who enrolled. Students will continue to receive instruction, complete the appropriate coursework and have the opportunity to earn the credit for which they enrolled.
BCSD Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator Cassandra Cowdrey will provide instruction for the class while we put longer-term instructional support in place specifically for these students. Mrs. Cowdrey is a certified K-12 music educator with experience teaching music across all grade levels, including high school band, elementary general music, choir and STEP. Before becoming BCSD's Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator in 2022, she also served as a lead STEP and elementary music teacher, school-level mentor and district evaluator.
I recognize that hearing about a staffing change without this context created a very different impression of what this means for students. I apologize that our communication did not reach you before those concerns developed. I hope this provides a clearer understanding of both the staffing adjustment and, most importantly, our plan to continue supporting the students enrolled in the course.

Our students are making gains in math! For the 2025-2026 school year, our SC Ready Math scores increased by 7.2 percent. According to the South Carolina Department of Education, this makes us the school district with the third-highest growth in SC Ready Math scores in the state!
