Dr. Howder was named principal of Hanahan Middle in 2026. She has spent all 25 years of her education career in Berkeley County School District – and she is a product of BCSD. She previously taught eighth grade science at Sedgefield Middle before transitioning to the district’s Adult and Community Education program to serve as a workforce specialist. She has served as an assistant principal at Daniel Island School, Berkeley Middle, Sangaree Middle and College Park Middle before entering her first principal role at St. Stephen Middle in 2024.

Dr. Howder studied elementary education at the College of Charleston. She holds a Master of Education degree in educational leadership through The Citadel, where she also received her Education Specialist degree in educational leadership. She attained her doctorate in Educational Administration through the University of South Carolina.

Kelly Owens is a native of Charleston, South Carolina, and attended Mars Hill University, where she played collegiate volleyball, and the College of Charleston. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from Liberty University.  

Ms. Owens joined the Hanahan Middle School team in 2019 as an Assistant Principal. She has thirty years of experience in education, with twenty of those years as a classroom teacher. Her experience includes being the Title I Facilitator at St. Stephen Middle, a  language arts teacher at both Berkeley Middle and James Island Middle, as well as a high school volleyball coach and official.

At Hanahan Middle, she works with teachers, students, and parents to support a positive learning environment to help students reach their full potential.

Mr. Matthews graduated with a B.S. in Elementary Education from Charleston Southern University.  He obtained his master's degree in elementary administration and supervision from The Citadel. Prior to coming to Hanahan Middle, Mr. Matthews was at College Park Middle since 1999.  At CPM, he was a 7th grade science and social studies teacher, the school's title one facilitator, data and technology coordinator, and most recently an assistant principal.
