Carolyn Lewis School

Dr. Martin L. Wright brings more than 27 years of educational leadership experience in public schools across South Carolina and Georgia. Appointed principal of CLS on April 20, 2026, for the 2026–2027 school year, he is dedicated to fostering academic excellence, strong leadership, and continuous improvement.

A graduate of Claflin University, Dr. Wright earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and later completed a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership at Columbia International University. Recognized as a transformational leader, he is known for building trust, inspiring shared vision, promoting collaboration, and developing future leaders. His commitment to excellence and a culture of care helps empower students, staff, and communities to thrive.

Dr. Batkins joined the BCSD community on August 10, 2017 as a science and social studies teacher at Cane Bay Middle. He previously served DD4 as a science and technology teacher in addition to coaching Lego Robotics. Prior to helping open CLS, he was an assistant principal at Hanahan Middle School. Dr. Batkins received his Bachelor's Degree from Mississippi State University in Elementary Education, his Master's in Educational Administration from The Citadel, and his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Charleston Southern University.

Dr. Batkins’s primary goal is to ensure that every child and their family feels supported, valued, and inspired. He is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and nurturing environment that promotes academic excellence, character development, and a love for learning. Dr. Batkins feels incredibly fortunate to be a part of a school environment where students can thrive, explore their passions, and reach their full potential. He is eager to continue on this exciting journey together and make The Carolyn Lewis School a place where dreams are nurtured, and futures are shaped.

It is with great pride and continued enthusiasm that I begin my second year as assistant principal at Carolyn Lewis School. Over the past year, it has been a privilege to serve our scholars, families, and staff while helping to create a learning environment that is both challenging and nurturing.

Prior to joining the CLS family, I served as an administrative assistant at Boulder Bluff Elementary and spent twelve years as a fifth-grade teacher at Cross Elementary. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Claflin University and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Concordia University.

My commitment remains rooted in continuous improvement and ensuring that every student is equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed in college, career, and life. I look forward to building on the foundation we’ve established as we continue shaping the leaders and innovators of tomorrow—together.
