Acting Principal

Dr. Marion "Wally" Baird joined Berkeley County School District as the Executive Director of Academics and Innovation in August 2021. For the past two years, Dr. Baird has served BCSD as the Executive Director of Elementary Schools, providing leadership and support to principals across the district.

Dr. Baird entered the teaching profession in a nontraditional format in 1997 through the Teach for America program. With extensive prior experience as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and district administrator, Dr. Baird brings a wealth of knowledge and a proven track record of effective leadership. Dr. Baird believes that through positive relationships and experiences, students will reach their potential and maximize their effectiveness.

Dr. Baird received his Bachelor's Degree from Charleston Southern University, his Master of Education degree in Administration from The Citadel in 2001, and his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University in 2011

Daniel Batkins

Daniel Batkins

Assistant Principal

Dr. Batkins joined the BCSD community on August 10, 2017 as a science and social studies teacher at Cane Bay Middle. He previously served DD4 as a science and technology teacher in addition to coaching Lego Robotics. Prior to helping open CLS, he was an assistant principal at Hanahan Middle School. Dr. Batkins received his Bachelor's Degree from Mississippi State University in Elementary Education, his Master's in Educational Administration from The Citadel, and his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Charleston Southern University.

Dr. Batkins’s primary goal is to ensure that every child and their family feels supported, valued, and inspired. He is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and nurturing environment that promotes academic excellence, character development, and a love for learning. Dr. Batkins feels incredibly fortunate to be a part of a school environment where students can thrive, explore their passions, and reach their full potential. He is eager to continue on this exciting journey together and make The Carolyn Lewis School a place where dreams are nurtured, and futures are shaped.

Christal Stevens

Assistant Principal

It is with great enthusiasm that I join Carolyn Lewis School as an assistant principal.  I am confident that I will continue to provide our scholars with a challenging and enriching school experience. 

I have been in BCSD as an administrative assistant for the past two years at Boulder Bluff Elementary and spent twelve years as a  fifth grade teacher at Cross Elementary. I obtained my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Claflin University and earned a master's degree in Educational Leadership from Concordia University.

My professional goal is focused on continuous improvement and ensuring that all students graduate with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed in college, career, and life. Together, we are shaping the leaders and innovators of tomorrow.
