Berkeley County School District and Berkeley Middle are excited to share that Cpl. Trevar Hemphill with the Moncks Corner Police Department has been named the district’s 2024-2025 School Resource Officer of the Year.
Hemphill is entering his fourth year serving as an SRO at Berkeley Middle. He has served in law enforcement for 15 years.
Hemphill was surprised with the recognition at Berkeley High on Monday during the first day of BCSD’s annual SRO summer training event. Tim Knight, BCSD Director of Security and Emergency Management, spoke very highly of Hemphill when presenting the award.
When leading into the big reveal of this year’s award recipient, Knight said this SRO has been described as dependable and hardworking – “the kids love him, and he loves the kids.” School administrators have known him to be a team player, and that the school and surrounding area know him to be an asset to the school, one who is “mission-driven, compassionate and collaborative”.
“He’s a dedicated SRO,” Knight said, adding, “Kids love him, staff loves him, and he is just a very respected member of that school community – really of all of Moncks Corner.”
Hemphill’s recognition as the SRO of the Year was met with applause from his fellow district SROs, and a surprise visit from the administrative team at Berkeley Middle who came out to support him.
Hemphill described himself as one who is content working in the background but was appreciative of the recognition and said everything he does is simply because he loves the students at Berkeley Middle.
“I’m just trying to help them learn and grow, and put them on a better path to be successful in life,” he said.
Berkeley Middle Assistant Principal Lyndi Valicek said it is not uncommon to see Hemphill engaging with students in the hallway or shooting some basketball with them at recess. He will even come out and support students at their athletic events as well.
“He is very visible,” she said. “Our students absolutely love him…I feel like he’s been a very positive influence on our students and our community.”
