HES Counseling Services

The role of a school counselor is to support all students socially, emotionally, and academically. As school counselors, we are here to assist with any needs for the student or the family. Hanahan Elementary School Counseling Supports include the following:

  • Individual Counseling: This can occur in two different ways.

    • "Pep Talks"- These occur as needed to address a temporary need of your student (classroom behaviors, student is having a rough day).

    • Individual Student Support-Sometimes a student requires one-on-one school counselor support in order to learn or strengthen their social, emotional or academic skills. Common topics include anger, coping skills, social skills, in-class behavior, low self-esteem, etc. Individual school counselor support is short-term. This type of support is typically provided once a week for a total of 6-8 weeks. If the family would like additional or more intensive support, a community resource list with local counseling agencies is available. Berkeley County Mental Health is another great resource available as HES currently has a school based counselor from Berkeley County Mental Health working in our building.

  • Group Counseling Support: Small groups are established as needed for various concerns such as coping skills, social skills, self-esteem, peer relations, etc. Small group support is also short-term. Small groups meet once a week for a total of 6-8 weeks.

  • Classroom Guidance Lessons: Classroom Guidance is part of the Special Area Rotation Schedule. Students will have Classroom Guidance once every other week. Classroom Guidance lessons focus on Social-Emotional Learning.

  • Immediate Student Support: Sometimes our students have rough days. Crisis support occurs as needed. Sometimes even taking a break in a different environment can help turn a day around!

Hanahan Elementary School Counselors can also assist families with social worker support, community resources lists, and food assistance through our Backpack Buddies partnership with Restoration Community Church.

The HES School Counselors would like for you all to know that we are here to support you in any way that we can. Please contact your student’s grade level counselor via phone, email, or Rooms if you have any questions or would like assistance, we are happy to help and will get back to you as soon as we can during regular school hours!

Hello HES Hawks,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself! My name is Lakisha Brown Crawford aka Mrs. BC and I am the K5, 2nd, 4th grade Elementary School Counselor. I am so excited to be part of the Hanahan Elementary family; I am so proud of this community, the camaraderie, and family support we receive is overwhelming. I am so blessed to be a part of the Hanahan Community.

My passion for school counseling began during my time as a student at SC State University where I earned my Masters of Education in School Counseling and Educational Specialist Degree from Liberty University. I have 16 years combined school counseling experience at theElementary and Secondary level. What I love most about the elementary level is the genuine curiosity students have in their learning and the world around them, as well as the opportunity for early intervention support that can have a lifetime positive impact on a child.

As a School Counselor, my primary responsibility is to promote the academic, career, and social/emotional development of ALL students.  A great deal of this year’s focus will be providing lessons which build and strengthen the Social Emotional well-being.  I look forward to offering support to the Hanahan Elementary students, staff, families, and community.  I will be meeting with students individually and in small groups, conducting classroom counseling lessons geared toward the Social Emotional Learning Curriculum, meeting with parents (google or zoom meets), collaborating with teachers and staff, and consulting with community organizations to benefit and meet the needs of all Hanahan Elementary students.

You may have noticed above that I put in bold and underlined the word, “ALL” students. Sometimes when the term “counselor” is heard, some may perceive that a counselor may only work with a select few students in a 1:1 counseling capacity, but that is not the case! School Counseling programs reach and meet the needs of ALL students in a school through many various ways, including those listed above. I am here to advocate for ALL students. If you ever have any questions or concerns, or do not wish to have your child participate in these school counseling services, please do not hesitate to call or email me at any time.

I am so excited to work with your children and get to know you throughout the school year!

Hello HES family and friends!

My name is Michelle Sanford. The 2020-2021 school year is my 4th year as a school counselor, and I feel so blessed to be a member of the Hanahan Hawks family!

I received my Masters of Education in Counselor Education from The Citadel in 2017. I have been passionate about working with children since a young age. As a school counselor, my goal is to help meet the needs of all students socially, emotionally, and academically. In addition to providing classroom guidance lessons, it is critical to provide student support through small group counseling and short-term individual counseling.

I am a firm believer in the power of creating meaningful relationships with all students. I believe all students are unique and children come to us from diverse backgrounds with different experiences and abilities. Students should be able to celebrate their individual strengths, as well as work to improve their weaknesses. I believe that all students can learn, and I hope to help all students achieve success across each developmental domain.

I look forward to working with your students and having another great year! Please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns.
