Before coming to BMS, Thurman was an assistant principal at Philip Simmons Middle for 7 years. His career as an educator spans over 14 years in which he has taught mathematics, life skills and computer science courses.

Mr. Thurman believes in the power of mentorship, a characteristic he gained from his experience in Call Me MISTER, an initiative to recruit men from minority and underprivileged backgrounds in service as educators. Serving as a mentor has allowed Mr. Thurman to build stronger connections to students and families he has served throughout the years. 

Thurman holds a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Clemson University, a M.Ed. in secondary administration and supervision from Southern Wesleyan University and is currently pursuing an EdD in educational leadership from Gardner-Webb University.

Mrs. Courtenaye Johnson was named Assistant Principal of Berkeley Middle School in June of 2022. Her experience includes over 20 years working with children and families in a variety of settings, including 15 years as a classroom teacher.  Mrs. Johnson most recently served as the Title I Facilitator at Cross High School.  

Prior to her time at Cross High, she was a 7th grade social studies teacher at Sedgefield Middle School where she was named the 2016-2017 Teacher of the year. 

Mrs. Johnson holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and Geography as well as a Bachelor of Secondary Education from Simon Fraser University. Mrs. Johnson also attended University of South Carolina where she earned her Master of Education in School Administration.

Mrs. Lyndi Valicek was named Assistant Principal of Berkeley Middle School in December of 2022. Mrs. Valicek has spent her entire educational career in Berkeley County. She spent nine years as a teacher at Macedonia Middle, one year as a Title I Facilitator at Macedonia Middle, and the last 6 years as an Innovative Learning Coordinator for Berkeley County.

Mrs. Valicek earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Charleston Southern University, a Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with and emphasis in Technology from Grand Canyon University, and attended Gardner-Webb University for Administration.
