Michael Wilkerson has been named the new assistant principal for athletics at Timberland High School.
With a strong background in leadership, athletics, and education, Wilkerson brings decades of experience and a deep commitment to student success.
Wilkerson most recently served the past three years as an assistant principal at Philip Simmons High School. Prior to his leadership with the Iron Horses, Wilkerson served as principal at Berkeley Middle School for ten years, where he led the school to national recognition as a Unified Champion School for its inclusive work in physical education, the arts, and Special Olympics collaboration. Earlier in his career, he served as Assistant Principal at Goose Creek High School and taught science at Hanahan High School.
"I am honored to join the proud tradition of Timberland High School,” said Wilkerson. “As a native of Berkeley County, I have vivid memories of coaching against and preparing athletes to compete with Timberland—those were always hard-fought battles against outstanding coaches and talented athletes. I’m excited to help continue supporting and building a culture where our student-athletes grow not only in their sport, but also as leaders, teammates, and individuals prepared for life beyond high school."
Wilkerson’s contributions extend beyond the classroom, having coached multiple sports including football, track, and golf at Hanahan and Berkeley High Schools. As an offensive line coach, he helped lead Berkeley to the 1996 4A State Football Championship. In 2019, he was inducted into the Berkeley High School Athletic Hall of Fame in recognition of his lasting impact on the school’s athletic legacy.
Wilkerson earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from The Citadel, where he was a three-year football letterman and a member of the 1992 Southern Conference Championship team. He later completed a Master of Arts in Education in Biology and a Master of Education in Secondary School Administration, both from The Citadel—further demonstrating his passion for both science and school leadership.
