The Daffodil project aims to plant 1.5 million daffodil bulbs in gardens around the world to remember the children who were murdered during the Holocaust.

Last week, our 8th grade students planted daffodil bulbs to begin our very own garden here at SRM. The garden is located at the front of the school down by the 8th grade wing.

We can't wait to see them bloom!

Local musician and educator, Mr. Cannon, recently joined Sangaree Middle to deliver presentations on traditional percussion from Western, Northern, and Southern Africa. These presentations were built around objectives and standards for 7th grade Social Studies.

He reviewed each region’s physical geography (landforms and natural resources), cultural and linguistic diversity, and historical context.

Students also practiced locating regions on a map of Africa and demonstrated their ability to perform a greeting in Swahili.

Mr. Cannon explained how instrument construction often reflects region‑specific resources and environments (for example, Nile‑region drums sometimes use fish skin rather than goat skin) and discussed how instruments relate to local agricultural, religious, and cultural practices.

This was another example of the creativity that Sangaree teachers bring to help students in the learning process!

State Treasurer Curtis Loftis Recognizes Dr. Michael Crosby of Sangaree Middle School as Educator of the Month

Berkeley County teacher shares a passion for preparing students for financial challenges of real world

COLUMBIA, S.C. (October 24, 2025) – South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis has named Dr. Michael Crosby of Sangaree Middle School as the October Educator of the Month for the South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program, an initiative Loftis established to expand the number of educators teaching personal finance education across the state.

"I am grateful for enthusiastic educators like Dr. Michael Crosby who are making a positive difference in educating our young people about the realities of managing their money," Treasurer Loftis said. "Equipping his students with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions and avoid the pitfalls many adults currently face will go a long way in ensuring their financial well-being.”

The South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program provides financial incentives to K-12 teachers who are experts in personal finance education and have a passion to share this knowledge with their peers. Since 2020, this ground-breaking program has provided specialized training and free personal finance curriculum resources that better enable them to promote financial literacy education in K-12 schools. It is sponsored by Future Scholar, South Carolina’s 529 College Savings Plan, and in partnership with SC Economics.

After a successful career in the construction sector, Crosby shifted his focus to education, using his business management and MBA degrees and real-world experience to focus on the importance of STEM and finance in his classrooms. He was concurrently working on his doctorate until completion in education focusing on curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Crosby states his most important role is that of a husband and father.

“Teaching financial education to my community is extremely important to me, and I am committed to preparing my students to be able to truly take care of themselves,” Crosby explained. “Many adults in our community struggle because they were not taught how to handle their finances, but their children can change the future by using the tools we are providing in the classroom to forge a different journey. I’m excited to be part of that cultural change.”

About Future Scholar

Future Scholar, South Carolina’s 529 College Savings Plan, is administered through the State Treasurer’s Office. Recent changes at the federal level have expanded the number of qualified uses for 529 funds, making it even more flexible for families to support a lifetime of learning. Our very own 8th grader, Harmony, has successfully auditioned for the Region 4 Orchestra and earned an impressive 4th chair ranking!

This is a major accomplishment: it means Harmony ranks among the best student musicians from orchestra programs across Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Hampton, Jasper, and Orangeburg counties.

Harmony is only the second student in SRM history to achieve this high honor. Even more impressively, she prepared almost all of her audition music independently, with very little help.

Way to go!
