Dr. Ezra Cowan was appointed as principal at SFM during the 2025-2026 school year. Dr. Cowan graduated with a bachelor's degree from North Carolina A&T State University.

After graduating from A&T and a career in sales, Dr. Cowan earned a master of arts in teaching at The Citadel, a M.Ed. in school leadership and an education specialist degree for school superintendent. Dr. Cowan received a doctorate in education systems improvement science at Clemson University.

Most recently in Berkeley County School District, Dr. Cowan served as an assistant principal at Westview Middle.

Brendan McFadden is an award-winning educator with experience ranging from elementary to adult education. He is dedicated to inspiring leadership and fostering a thriving school culture. His leadership approach focuses on creating student-centered environments that encourage growth and achievement. By promoting collaboration, integrating technology, and supporting professional development, he empowers both staff and students to reach their full potential.

Brendan holds a Master of Science in Educational Studies from Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Goucher College. Before coming to Sedgefield Middle, Brendan served as a lead teacher in Baltimore City Public Schools, coaching small teams of teachers and leading school-based professional development.

Larry Odom is a seasoned educator and leader with extensive experience in various educational roles. He served as the principal of Carvers Bay High School for five years in Georgetown County School District. His background also includes roles as an assistant principal and guidance counselor in multiple school districts, demonstrating a strong commitment to student development and educational leadership.

In addition to his educational career, Larry Odom has a distinguished military background, having served as a logistics officer and Lieutenant Colonel in the South Carolina Army National Guard. Mr. Odom holds multiple degrees, including an Ed.S in educational leadership from Cambridge College and a master's degrees from South Carolina State University in elementary and secondary school guidance and counseling.

Jessica Coates serves as Administrative Assistant at Sedgefield Middle School.  She has 25 years of experience in education, including over 10 years in leadership and administration.  She is energetic and passionate about connecting with students and families.  Ms. Coates has a deep love for curriculum and instruction and takes great joy in supporting every student’s success.  Equity in education is very important to her, and she is committed to creating an inclusive environment where all students have the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.  Her educational philosophy centers on fostering a supportive and challenging learning environment that empowers every student to reach their full potential.

Ms. Coates is dedicated to making Sedgefield Middle a place where students feel valued, inspired, and equipped for lifelong learning.  She looks forward to continuing to serve the school community with enthusiasm and a steadfast commitment to excellence.
