Last year, Sedgefield Middle welcomed Dr. Ezra Cowan as the school’s new interim principal. With the start of the 2026-2027 school year just a couple of weeks away, the school would like to extend another warm welcome to Dr. Cowan – this time, as the school’s new official principal.

Some families had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Cowan when he first joined the staff last year, but the school wants to make sure everyone is aware of another chance to get acquainted with him during Meet the Teacher on Monday, Aug. 10.

That day, while families are picking up their students’ schedules between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., families are also encouraged to swing by the school gym lobby, where Dr. Cowan will be hanging out. The ServiceMaster of Charleston’s ice cream truck will be giving out some sweet treats, and Lowcountry Food Bank will also be on site for a food distribution event (more details on this below).

Dr. Cowan has taught a total of 15 years and is now entering his seventh year with BCSD. He previously served as a physical education and a personal health and wellness teacher for six years.

Dr. Cowan studied political science at NC A&T State University. He went on to attain a Master of Arts in teaching through The Citadel, where he got his second Master’s degree in educational leadership. He continued at The Citadel to get his Education Specialist degree in educational leadership. He received his doctorate in education systems improvement science from Clemson University.

Dr. Cowan said he is really excited to continue to serve Sedgefield Middle as the school’s principal.

“At Sedgefield Middle School, my purpose is to set high expectations and foster a culture that believes every Shark is capable of excellence,” he said. “Through improved instruction, intentional team support, shared accountability, and strong partnerships with families and our community, we will close academic gaps, build character, and prepare each Shark – regardless of race, creed, or color – for a future of academic curiosity and limitless possibilities.”
