Because of her success at Sedgefield Middle, Lynsey Phillips has been selected to be the first principal of Midtown Middle, which opens in Nexton in the fall of 2026. As Phillips prepares to open Midtown Middle, Dr. Ezra Cowan will serve as interim principal at SFM.
Most recently in Berkeley County School District, Dr. Cowan served as an assistant principal at Westview Middle. To ensure a smooth transition, Phillips will assist and mentor Dr. Cowan in his new role until January 2026.
“I’m most looking forward to building strong relationships, strengthening our school culture, and implementing a clear, shared vision for success, said Dr. Cowan. "Most importantly, I’m committed to keeping students the main focus of every decision we make.”
Dr. Cowan graduated with a bachelor's degree from North Carolina A&T State University.
After graduating from A&T and a career in sales, Dr. Cowan earned a master of arts in teaching at The Citadel, a M.Ed. in school leadership and an education specialist degree for school superintendent. Dr. Cowan received a doctorate in education systems improvement science at Clemson University.
