Following the announcement of Principal Tina Hoots’ retirement, Nexton Elementary School is preparing for a leadership transition. Aimee Fulmer, BCSD Chief Human Resources Officer, will assume the role of principal beginning in July.

As district leaders carefully evaluated the leadership needs of Nexton Elementary, Ms. Aimee Fulmer expressed a desire to return to school-based leadership and serve the Nexton Elementary community.

“Ms. Fulmer has been an invaluable member of our cabinet team, but she shares my belief that our greatest responsibility is ensuring schools have the strong leadership they need to be successful,” said Superintendent Dr. Anthony Dixon. “I greatly appreciate her willingness to step into this role and am confident Nexton Elementary will continue to thrive under her leadership.”

A 29-year education veteran, Ms. Fulmer brings extensive experience in instruction, school leadership, and district operations. Throughout her career, she has served as a classroom teacher, teacher evaluator, school administrator, and district leader. Fulmer previously served as the first principal of Bowen’s Corner Elementary School, leading the school through its opening and early years, and she has overseen district administrative services, student assignment, elementary school supervision, transportation, human resource, and OSHA safety.

Over the past three years, Ms. Fulmer has led significant improvements within Berkeley County School District’s Human Resources Division. Under her leadership, the district achieved a 94% teacher retention rate, welcomed record attendance at recruitment events, expanded alternative certification pathways, implemented virtual onboarding, and strengthened staffing and budgeting systems to better support schools and students.

“While I have enjoyed serving our district in Human Resources and other central services roles, my heart has always been in schools,” said Fulmer. “The opportunity to work directly with students, staff, and families each day is what drew me to education, and I am honored to join the Nexton Elementary community. Nexton has a highly effective team, a strong culture, and a commitment to excellence, and I look forward to building on that success.”

Mrs. Fulmer holds both a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and Master’s Degree in Elementary Administration from Charleston Southern University. Ms. Fulmer was previously recognized as BCSD Assistant Principal of the Year and Principal of the Year, was a top three finalist for South Carolina State Principal of the Year, and served as a state representative for the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP).
