All About School Improvement Councils

Key Points:

  • The School Improvement Council (SIC) serves as an advisory committee to a school's principal and faculty.

  • Unlike PTA/Os and other voluntary school organizations,councils are mandated by law to exist in every public school in South Carolina.

  • SICs play a key role in the education of our state's children, bringing together parents, educators and community stakeholders to work collectively to improve their local schools.

  • More than 16,000 people serve on SICs in South Carolina.

Key Functions:

  • SICs work with the school to develop and implement a five-year school improvement plan (school renewal plan).

  • SICs monitor and evaluate success in reaching the plan's goals and objectives.

  • SICs write an annual report to parents about the progress of the plan.

  • SICs assist the principal in writing the narrative for the School Report Card.

  • SICs advise on the use of school incentive awards and provide assistance as requested by the principal.

Beta Club

The Goose Creek High BETA Club received 19 indvidual and group awards at the 2022 State Convention. Many members will travel to Nashville, TN to compete in the 2022 National Convention this Summer.

Leader in Me

Goose Creek High was proud to implement Leader In Me for the 2021-2022 school year. Students learned life skills and employability skills on a daily basis. Leader in Me is an evidence-based, comprehensive model that builds leadership and life skills in students, creates a high-trust school culture, and lays the foundation for sustained academic achievement. Student will take four courses throughout their high school experience and make deep connections with the same classmates and teachers.

BCA Continues to Shine

Berkeley Center for the Arts continues to shine within Goose Creek High School. In the 2021-2022 school year, BCA has traveled all around the Southeast to compete and show their talents to a national audience. They continue to cement their place as one of the top Arts Programs in the state and nation.
