Volunteer Opportunities

Berkeley County School District supports the use of volunteers and volunteer programs to promote extended educational opportunities for students. The District maintains a firm belief that using community resources can increase the learning opportunities for students. In addition, the use of volunteers also supports teachers in expanding their professional capacities.

While most volunteer programs are implemented at the school level, the District oversees the system-wide program, including development of common objectives, training for principals and site coordinators, assistance with recruiting and retaining volunteers and other needed support services.

State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) background checks

The district will obtain a name-based criminal record history check on all volunteers from the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) prior to their working on our campuses and with our students and employees .

For additional information about school volunteers, please review Policy IFCD - School Volunteers.

Volunteer Application & Approval

All those interested in becoming a volunteer with Berkeley County School District or its schools must go through a screening process prior to receiving a criminal background check and program approval.

*Don't wait until the last minute. This process usually requires several business days.

You can begin the process by clicking the button below. Additional information on the process can be found in the flow chart (also included below).

Volunteer Approval Flow Chart

Step 1

The Pre-screener

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer should first complete the pre-screener located on the BCSD website.

Step 2

School-level review

Pre-screenings will be approved at the school level regularly (daily if possible). Desired volunteers will be sent the link to the Raptor system via the pre-screening system only after the pre-screener has been completed.

Step 3

Raptor approval

Once the pre-screener is approved, the potential volunteer is sent the Raptor link to complete the actual Raptor criminal background check. The Raptor system is reviewed daily at the central office. Entries may take several days to process.

Step 4

School level Raptor review

School-level employees review approved volunteers, via the Raptor system, on each business day. Upon review, schools will notify parents they have been approved.

Step 5

Links to sign up to chaperone or attend events will only be sent to approved volunteers (after the criminal background check is complete). Schools may use several several processes and/or platforms to manage volunteer lists.
