If you’re a parent of a soon-to-be kindergarten student in Berkeley County, there’s an event you don’t want to miss this week.
Berkeley County School District is hosting a Ready for School Roundup on Thursday, May 31 At Westview Primary School. The event is the third of its kind in recent months.
Through early learning programs, BCSD works with children birth to five years of age on school preparation. BCSD also has ongoing partnerships which facilitate access to services that are responsive to children and families’ specific needs. Thursday’s event will showcase those partnerships and offer parents an opportunity to connect before the school year begins.
“It’s to help them understand what they as parents can do at home and what they can do to get their children prepared,” said BCSD Director of Federal and State Programs Dr. Denise Ling.
Dr. Ling said there will be opportunities for parents to get a better understanding of all layers involved in the care and education of children in Berkeley County School District. There will be representatives from various departments, like transportation and child nutrition, available to answer questions.
“We’ve also included folks like Coastal Dental, Lowcountry Food Bank and Trident United Way,” Dr. Ling said.
In this first year of hosting such school preparation events, Dr. Ling said the school district’s goal was to create a one-stop shop for parents with children coming to Berkeley County schools for the first time.
If you plan on attending, you should know the first 40 to arrive will have an opportunity to receive $10 worth of free groceries. There is also a strong literacy component at the event with several booths promoting literacy and some providing children with free books.
Dr. Ling said making that connection to reading with children at an early age is important.
“That’s really how we launch that child’s spark for learning,” she said.
The Ready for School Roundup is expected to last from 4 p.m. until 6:30 p.m., and it will be held in the Westview Primary multipurpose room.
