On Nov. 5, Stratford High's marching band placed sixth at the South Carolina Band Directors Association Class 5A State Championship. This is the highest placement the Marching Knights have earned in 5A finals in school history.

With a record number of 21 bands competing this year, Class 5A is the largest band competition class in the state.SHS placed fifth after its preliminary performance and advanced along with 11 other bands to compete that evening.

As Stratford took the field for its final performance, it started to rain on the band. This caused many issues, including electronic failures which caused the piano and synthesizer to stop working during the performance, but the band was still able to place sixth.

This year's marching band show was entitled “One Day I’ll Fly Away.” The theme centered around the life cycle of a butterfly. The show included the following music selections: "One Day I’ll Fly Away" by Joe Sample, "Symphonic Metamorphosis" by Paul Hindemith, "Dos Oruguitas" by Lin-Manuel Miranda and "Fly to Paradise" by Eric Whitacre.

Like the butterfly, all of us experience metamorphosis in our lives, and the directors used this message to connect with students this marching season.
