BCSD band programs score Outstanding Performance Award

Published on Tuesday, May 24, 2022

Berkeley County School District would like to recognize the four following school band programs for earning the highest achievement they could earn at a state level.

Hanahan Middle, Sangaree Middle, Westview Middle and Hanahan High’s band programs have all earned the Outstanding Performance Award for the 2021-2022 school year.

The Outstanding Performance Award (OPA) is the highest award given by the South Carolina Band Directors Association (SCBDA). Points are earned for the OPA through participation in SCBDA events. Those include Marching Band Championships (for high school), All-State and Region Bands, Concert Performance Assessment, and Solo and Ensemble.

Dr. Adam Scheuch, who serves as the Awards Chairman for the South Carolina Band Directors Association, announced the BCSD results earlier this month.

"This is a big deal, and we are excited to celebrate with you," he said in an e-email to the district.

Middle schools are required to earn at least 45 out of 50 possible points, and high schools are required to earn at least 90 out of 100 possible points. Schools earning this award must therefore demonstrate a high level of success in all required areas.

BCSD’s school scores were as follows:

Hanahan Middle School earned 46 points. Andre North serves as the director of bands for the school.

Sangaree Middle School earned 50 points. Brian Trauger is the school's band director.

Westview Middle School earned 50 points. The band is led by band director Ronnie Ward.

The Bands of Hanahan High earned 92 points. John Arnold is the director of bands for Hanahan High.
