Free/reduced meal applications encouraged, despite 2021-2022 free meal extension

Published Friday, August 6, 2021

In April 2021, nutrition waivers to extend free school meals for students through the 2021-2022 school year were approved by the federal government.

This means exactly what it sounds like – all students, at all schools, will eat meals prepared by Berkeley County School District Child Nutrition staff members at no cost.

However, while all students will receive free meals at school cafeterias for the duration of the 2021-2022 school year, those students who may have qualified for free and reduced lunch are still encouraged to apply. For schools and community members to qualify for some government programs and benefits, applications to the school free and reduced lunch program are necessary.

Please see the linked eligibility guidelines. Online applications are preferred, but paper applications will be available at your child’s school on August 16.
