Local businesses and organizations regularly come together for Trident United Way’s annual Day of Caring to find ways to give back to their community.
In Berkeley County School District, such groups often head to some of the schools to take on projects that will benefit the students.
At Timberland High, Santee Cooper employees initially had plans last school year to come out to the school, but the event got rained out.
Instead, Santee Cooper came out Oct. 2 to partner with students from Ronnie Ford’s agriculture class and Kevin Taylor’s manufacturing class to completely renovate, repair and refurbish the high school’s nature trail, boardwalk and outdoor classroom.
Timberland High is one of 15 business partnerships that Santee Cooper has in its service territory including Berkeley, Georgetown and Horry counties.
Kearney Gregory, community relations representative with Santee Cooper, said the company values the educational partnership it has with Timberland High.
“We were excited to have the opportunity to work safely with the students to help renew the outdoor classroom and assist with the cleanup and repair of the boardwalk area,” Gregory said. “These are challenging times, and our employees were grateful to volunteer in helping Timberland High School enhance their educational environment for their students. As a bonus, we were able to work with some great students and faculty members making our day extra-productive.”
Students helped blow leaves and sticks off the walkways. They trimmed trees and repaired guardrails and decking that had wood rot. They also cleaned up leaves and debris around the outdoor classroom, rebuilt benches and the classroom podium, and repaired the teacher platform.
Assistant Principal Michael Timko called it a great community-school effort.
“Timberland High School teachers will be excited with the outdoor classroom that was built, and the overall renovation project,” he said. “Thank you, Santee Cooper, for your support of Berkeley County School District and Timberland High School.”
