Sedgefield Middle graduating eighth-grader, Michael McCready, wrote in to and was chosen by The Today Show to participate in their Today Show Virtual Plaza braodcast on June 11.
The Today Show put out a call for the show's biggest fans to participate in #MyTODAYplaza live video experience with its anchors.
That day's particular segment included an Atlanta family who visited the real TODAY plaza in 2012 to announce a pregnancy, and a family in California with two reasons to celebrate: a graduation from fifth grade and a 13th birthday.
Michael's mom, Denise, said the show particularly highlighted 2020 graduates for the segment. Michael is rising freshman at Goose Creek High and wrote in to the show just for fun since he just graduated middle school.
Two days prior to the show airing, Denise received a call from NBC inviting them to be on the June 11 show. While the McCreadys are only seen for about seven to eight minutes, Denise said the family got to interact with producers and other members of the show for a couple of hours.
"It's a fast and furious two hours," she said.
The family initially had plans to visit New York for spring break but had to cancel because of the pandemic.
Michael himself is interested in media broadcast and has previously toured the set of Channel 2. He said he enjoyed the opportunity to be on the show.
"It was awesome," he said.
Sedgefield Middle Principal Heather Ducker said Michael is one of the school's shining stars.
"He is so positive and always has a smile on his face," she said.
