Teachers at Cainhoy Elementary found themselves "speechless and overwhelmed" this week as something happened that will impact each of their classrooms.

At a special lunch hosted by BP's Cooper River plant, teachers learned they would all be receiving 22 mini STEM/STEAM grants.

The "mini-grants" were provided in the form of Amazon gift cards. Administrators presented the gifts "Oprah style" during a staff meeting.

Cainhoy Elementary Title I facilitator Mrs. Joannah Sampson said teachers will be using the funds to purchase STEAM unit materials and other classroom supplies.

"We are truly thankful to BP for their amazing generosity and support of our Cainhoy staff and students. They help make us #CainhoyStrong," Mrs. Sampson said.

The move to support each teacher is one of several recently taken by BP to back the school and the surrounding area. BP director of communication and external affairs, Hope Lanier Freeman, said the company is "heavily invested in Cainhoy."

"We were really glad to help and show a little teacher appreciation," Freeman said. "They had no idea what was happening. It was a lot of fun."
