BCSD to suspend Test to Stay and quarantine; BCSD will stop contact tracing, testing and masking of close contacts without symptoms

Published February 28, 2022

As the impact of COVID-19 continues to decline throughout South Carolina, Berkeley County School District (BCSD) is following new guidance from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) on managing the virus as an endemic.

What does this mean?

On February 22, 2022, DHEC advised that schools and childcare centers could transition from Test to Stay and quarantine to learning, working and living with COVID-19 with minimal disruptions.

BCSD has documented two consecutive weeks with less than 10 percent of students and staff having COVID-19. Per the DHEC guidance, as of March 1, BCSD will suspend Test to Stay and quarantine. In addition, BCSD will stop contact tracing, testing and masking of close contacts without symptoms.

Any student or staff member currently under quarantine, or assigned a Test to Stay window of March 1 or later, will end his/her quarantine on March 1 and may return to school.

How does this impact an individual who tests positive for COVID-19?

Isolation requirements for those who test positive for COVID-19 will remain unchanged.

Individuals with symptoms and those who have tested positive should continue to report this information to the school nurse.

Are face coverings still required on school buses?

The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) will no longer require the use of masks by students and staff on state-owned and operated school buses. For more information, please review the SCDE February 25, 2022 memorandum, "Masks on School Buses Update"
