Sangaree Elementary again recognized as one of America's healthiest schools

Published Monday, September 24, 2018

There’s a belief that exists on the campus of Sangaree Elementary School, and it’s one that continues to receive national recognition.

For the second year in a row, SRE was among a select group of South Carolina schools placed on the coveted America’s Healthiest Schools list. SRE is one of only two Lowcountry schools to be named for the list published by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, which was founded by the American Heart Association.

Following the launch of a robust action plan covering aspects of healthy living and learning that range from instruction of handwashing practices to hosting farm to school activities – SRE finds itself among 461 schools from around the country.

Principal Barbara Webber said the recognition is exciting and the accomplishment is a reflection of the culture at the school.

“Providing that healthy environment provides a better learning environment,” she said. “They (students) can focus on learning.”

Among the many things SRE has accomplished that the organization specifically recognized were:

  • Meeting or exceeding federal nutrition standards for school meals and snacks
  • Breakfast offered daily
  • Wellness policies implemented and updated annually
  • 60 minutes or more of physical education per week with physical activity throughout the school day

In March of 2017 the school was also recognized by the School Nutrition Association for its use of creative approaches to implement a healthy lifestyle.
