While the swift movement on hires may have been a surprise to some, it was all part of the plan when the decision to host the hiring fair was made.
The goal was to help people see there are careers available in Berkeley County and also help BCSD’s graduating seniors see they don’t need “just a job.” Opportunities to begin careers with local employers are available.
“With our employers, they’re looking for people who are loyal, said BCSD Director of Career and Technical Education Tana Lee. “People who want to start with a company and stay there. They’re looking to invest in a person. In coming to this kind of job fair, they’re ready to hire people.”
Thursday’s event was the first of what the county and school district plan to grow through a partnership. More than 160 people showed up to network, interview and learn. You could see the pride on many of their faces as employers created an environment that said, “We’re here for you.”
Shyieka Robinson had never been to a job fair before Thursday and really didn’t have any idea on what to expect. She was impressed and surprised as she worked her way around the room in hopes of transitioning from a stay at home mom to a member of the Berkeley County workforce.
“The turnout is great,” she said. “…It makes me proud to be a part of Berkeley County.”
