B.O.L.T. LEGO Team headed to national competition

If events in The LEGO Movie were real, identifying “master builders” would be crucial to the perseverance of society. In Berkeley County we wouldn’t have to look far.

There’s a team of such “master builders” made from students at Berkeley Intermediate School and Berkeley Middle School. There are several boys and girls with hotshot hands, crafty capacities and a cooperative mindset. They’re known as the BIS/BMS B.O.L.T. LEGO Team, and after taking the Champions Award at a recent South Carolina competition and a third place finish in the robotics division at the same event, the students from Moncks Corner are headed to California.

Team members will be competing in the LEGOLAND Open Invitational in Carlsbad, Cali. this May. Wins in the East State Championship in February qualified the team for the opportunity to measure it’s capabilities against other “master builders” in the country.

Getting to California isn’t going to be easy. While the team has local bragging rights and trophies for the case, team members need funds to get to the big showdown, to pay for meals and housing and to get back to the Palmetto State after the competition ends. Team members need your help.

B.O.L.T. LEGO Team members and coaches are currently in the middle of a doughnut fundraiser with Krispy Kreme. Additional fundraisers are planned between now and May.

If you would like to make a donation, you can mail a check to Berkeley Intermediate School at 777 Stoney Landing Road in Moncks Corner, 29461. Checks should be made payable to BIS LEGO Team.

The B.O.L.T. LEGO Team is part of the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) program at Berkeley Intermediate and Berkeley Middle. The program is designed for children ages 9-14. It’s goal is to get children excited about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Organizers tout it as more than children “sitting around playing with colorful LEGO pieces.” It’s designed to force students to work though real-world math and science challenges, learn critical thinking techniques and much more.
