Stratford cyber defense teams to compete in National Youth Cyber Defense Competition

Stratford’s three cyber security competition teams (JROTC, varsity and junior varsity) had strong performances in the state competition and have advanced to compete in the semifinals of the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition to be held Saturday (Feb. 10).

After the first two rounds of competition, the JROTC team qualified for the Gold Tier in the state competition, where they were:

- ranked 17th out of 409 teams nationwide representing all service branches in the Gold Tier.

- ranked 2nd among 62 Army teams nationwide in the Gold Tier.

- #1 Army team (out of three) in SC.

- #2 team out of 12 JROTC (all services) Gold Tier teams in SC.

- one of only five SC JROTC teams (out of 27 total) to advance to the semifinals.

After the first two rounds of competition, the varsity team qualified for the Platinum Tier in the state competition, where they finished 7th out of 14 SC teams in the Open Division Platinum Tier. Only the top two SC Platinum Tier teams advanced to the semifinals. The varsity team’s performance also earned the students a trip to the 6th Annual Palmetto Cyber Defense Competition on April 14.

After the first two rounds of competition, the junior varsity team qualified for the Silver Tier in the state competition, where they finished 2nd out of seven SC teams in the Silver Tier to advance. Out of 442 teams nationwide in the Silver Tier, the JV team finished in the top 25 percent.

“As our least experienced team, this is an excellent performance,” coach Michael Eason said.

Coach Eason said the performance of the teams has also earned a training mento from SPAWAR as the varsity team prepares for the April 14 competition.
