The Berkeley High School weightlifting team competed in the South Carolina High School Strength Meet on Saturday March 23, and four Stags came home with state titles.
Austin Hewette won the 150-pound class. Luke Gadsden won the 160-pound class and Reggie Campbell won the 205-pound class of lifters.
Will Shannon, who was a state runner up in the 205-pound class last year, moved up to the 220-class this year and also won a state title. In addition, he set a new state record for squat as he took 610 pounds on his shoulders, bent his knees and smoothly pushed himself upright.
The record Shannon broke was set in 1994.
Ja'son Washington, 140-pound class, and Lence Correthers, 160-pound class were also recognized at the event with fourth place finishes.
