Following a brief discussion at the February 26, 2019 Berkeley County Board of Education meeting, the 2019-20 instructional calendar was unanimously approved.
That brief discussion centered on the timing of spring break.
The new calendar has students and teachers on spring break at the same time as Dorchester District 2. Board chair Sally Wofford said there were some requests from community members to align spring break with Charleston County School District (CCSD).
Board members agreed that aligning spring break with the proposed CCSD calendar was not an option.
“We tried. We discussed,” Wofford said.
The calendar for the next school year has teachers returning to work from summer break on Tuesday, August 13 and students returning on Monday, August 19. Fall break is November 27-29; winter break is December 23 – January 3 and spring break is April 13-17.
There are three inclement weather days built into the calendar.
The final day of school before summer break on the 2019-2020 calendar is June 3.
Voting on next year’s school calendar followed several surveys sent to teachers and a survey sent to parents.
