BCSD board expected to hear community feedback and have first reading on proposed attendance line changes
Published Wednesday, February 27, 2019
Per the request of community members, the Berkeley County Board of Education decided at Tuesday’s regular meeting to publish proposed attendance line guidelines ahead of the Thursday, February 28 special meeting during which attendance line changes will be discussed.
Also per the request of community members, the board is expected to have a first reading on Thursday and vote on one of the attendance line boundary change suggestions and the guidelines, following feedback and discussion at that special meeting. It’s important to note that changes and/or amendments can be made between the two readings and before attendance line changes become final.
Thursday’s special meeting will be in the style of other regular off-site board meetings. There will be at least one hour reserved for citizen comments, which will follow the format of citizen comments during regular board meetings. There will also be an agenda, which will include a presentation of the proposed attendance zones and other relevant information.
The meeting will be held at Sangaree Middle and is expected to begin at 6 p.m. and is specifically for the parents of high school age students living in the Sangaree area.
Additional information is provided below on proposed attendance line maps and guidelines.

Following board discussion at the regular meeting Tuesday, February 26, Option A, which was the first draft proposed to the community, is no longer being considered. The board will be seeking community feedback on Option B and Option C and as aforementioned, is expected to have a first reading and vote at the special meeting on Thursday, February 28.

All rising 10th-12th grade students in the modified attendance zone have the option to remain at Cane Bay High School or to transfer to Stratford High School.
Rising 9th grade students in the modified attendance zone will attend Stratford High School beginning August 2019.
Rising 9th grade students who have established athletic eligibility/presence have the option to attend Cane Bay High School.
Sibling Clause: Siblings residing in the same household that will attend high school in the same calendar year have the option to attend Cane Bay High if their older sibling remains a student there.
Though we would like to be able to provide transportation for students who make the choice to remain at Cane Bay High School, we do not have the resources to commit to that separate attendance zone transportation. The recommendation is that any student who meets the above criteria and chooses to remain at Cane Bay High would have to provide their own transportation.
*Currently, we transport 362 students in the Sangaree area to Cane Bay High School. We are not confident that current transportation resources could be managed well by adding additional routes to transport students to two different high schools from the same attendance area.
**There may be other individual circumstances we learn about from our families, those can be handled by the administration on a case-by-case basis and/or through an attendance appeal to the board.
