BCSD board considering new proposals, maps for suggested attendance line changes; Additional meeting scheduled

Revised Friday, February 22, 2019

At the Tuesday, February 12, 2019 meeting of the Berkeley County Board of Education, discussion was again held on proposed school attendance line changes.

Following meetings with community members, the board had an opportunity to review feedback on early proposals. That feedback prompted BCSD board members and administrators to consider additional options.

At the Tuesday meeting, board members were shown two new attendance line proposals with different physical boundaries, that would address the growing student population at Cane Bay High. With new maps in hand, the board is again seeking feedback from community members who would be impacted.

The board has decided to hold an additional meeting specifically for the parents of high school age students living in the Sangaree area. While the new options still look at moving Sangaree area high school students to Stratford High from Cane Bay, there are differences in where dividing lines are drawn.

Knowing community members hope to soon have an answer, the board is hoping to schedule another meeting by late February or early March so that those community members can again review the maps and share their concerns and/or insight.

UPDATE: A meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, February 28 at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at Sangaree Middle.

Suggested changes to boundary lines for Cane Bay schools were mentioned during the December quarterly update on the master facility and growth plan presented by consultant Dr. Tony Parker of Harding, Parker and Associates.

Dr. Parker described changing attendance lines as a "short term fix" to a long-term challenge the board and school district face with about 1,000 new students attending Berkeley County schools each year. While the suggestion to change attendance lines was among a handful of short-range, mid-range and long-range suggestions, Parker referred to the option as the "immediate challenge."

Additional information on suggestions provided to the board on responding to growth can be found in our December update.

Attendance line maps currently being considered/reviewed by the board can be viewed and downloaded at the links provided below.
