For the sixth year, the Berkeley Intermediate/Berkeley Middle BOLT team has qualified for the FIRST LEGO League State Championship.

The team qualified for the state competition after winning first place for robot performance in the November 3 Ace Basin Qualifying Tournament at Colleton County Middle School.

Following a summer that included a trip to the national competition in California, the BOLT team will be looking to improve upon its Champions Award and third place robotics finish in last year's state competition.

When it comes to what has made the team successful year after year, teachers and coaches say it's the ability of the children to focus as a team.

"This team works very well together, and they always try to put forth maximum effort," said teacher/coach Nicole Brevard-Hines.

The BOLT team is one of two teams from BCSD to qualify for the state competition. A first-year robotics team from Devon Forest Elementary also qualified for the competition after winning the Core Values Award at a Summerville competition.

This year's East State Championship will be held at Cane Bay Elementary on December 8.
