The final counts are in, and the winnings at the Coastal Carolina Fair show visual arts students in Berkeley County School District are excelling.

With 57 total ribbon winners, BCSD youth art submissions were recognized more than any other school district. BCSD students hauled in about 38 percent of all available awards.

While those numbers are impressive, BCSD Visual Arts Coordinator Vickie Hickman says what’s most impressive is the consistency in how well students are awarded each year.

“I am truly amazed by the overall ability, quality of technique, style and compositional arrangement of the work our students produce,” Hickman said. “Most of our advanced students produce work on the college level.”

Hickman said she has not received any feedback from the judges, but the number of ribbons awarded show they were very impressed with BCSD students. Among the winnings was one of two Best of Show ribbons, awarded to Julia Wood of Philip Simmons High.

Hickman said the quality of work and the passion with which it was created is a reflection of what teachers are accomplishing in classrooms across the district.

“We truly have the most caring, gifted and talented art teachers in Berkeley County,” she said. “I have the opportunity to spend time with them, and they are top-notch and inspire our students to strive to do their best.”
