When it comes to dedication and teamwork, there’s a group of Berkeley County School District students that “set the bar this summer.” If they have their way this weekend, they will raise that bar even higher.
The team of 13-year-olds that make up the Moncks Corner Dixie Youth All-Star Baseball Team recently won the state championship. Now, they’ll play a team from North Carolina Saturday afternoon in the first game of the 2018 Dixie Baseball World Series.
The boys will walk on the field in Bossier City, Louisiana not just representatives of Moncks Corner and Berkeley County. They are the sole representation of the Palmetto State with supporters sparing no expense in recognizing their accomplishments.
"It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for these kids," Town of Moncks Corner Recreation Director Becky Ellison said. "It’s hard to make it (to the World Series) in any age group."
In fact, this is the first time a team from Moncks Corner has made it to the Dixie Youth All-Star Baseball World Series. It’s important, Ellison said, that the town "roll out the red carpet." Wednesday at 6 p.m. the town will host a send-off and celebration for the boys.
“The town has really rallied around them and supported them," Ellison said. "It’s a great group of kids."
There are some expenses associated with taking the team to the tournament. Those affiliated with the team have set up a gofundme account if you’re interested in helping alleviate the burden of those expenses.
Saturday’s game against the team from Brunswick, N.C. will be played at 4 p.m. The winner of that game will face a team from either Arkansas or Tennessee.
