The South Carolina Band Director's Association (SCBDA) recently announced its 2018 Outstanding Performance Award (OPA) recipients. Nine Berkeley County School District (BCSD) band programs received the award, the highest possible award given to a band program in the state of South Carolina.

The Hanahan High School band, led by Director Dr. Gretchen Bowles, was 1 of 16 programs in division 3A to earn this award among bands from South Carolina. Goose Creek High, led by Director Josh Artz, and Stratford High, led by Director Todd Smith, were 2 of 10 programs earning this distinction across the state in the 4A division.

"I am very proud of all of our bands who earned the SCBDA OPA this year," said Ryan Westberry, Coordinator of Performing Arts. "We know that we have some of the best bands in the land, and the directors and students work very hard each year to perfect their craft. Learning that six middle schools were also recognized illustrates a commitment to excellence that is fostered in our lower schools, which feed into our high school programs. I am very much looking forward to all that our BCSD band programs will continue to achieve."

The SCBDA also selects Junior OPA recipients among the middle schools across the state. Six BCSD middle schools received the honor, including:

  • Cane Bay Middle School- Monica Overstreet, director
  • Daniel Island School- John Spitler, director
  • Hanahan Middle School- Andre North, director
  • Marrington Middle School- Swati Linder, director
  • Sangaree Middle School- Brian Trauger, director
  • Westview Middle School- Ronnie Ward, director
