College Park Middle robotics team looking for donations to make it to national competition

Five young men at College Park Middle School have the opportunity of a lifetime. They just need help getting there.

College Park Middle School teacher and robotics coach Lisa Muggeo recently started a GoFundMe page for the aspiring engineers on the team that’s shown it has the knowledge, dedication and passion to compete on a national level. They just don’t have the means to get to Iowa for the national competition this spring.

Muggeo’s team recently won the overall excellence award at a regional robotics competition, which qualified the team for a trip to the state competition and the national competition.

Pride is what Ms. Muggeo feels when she thinks about what the team has accomplished, especially when she reflects upon the fact the boys often compete against seniors in high school. She doesn’t want to take anything away from teams that have won competitions, but she’s firm in her belief that winning an excellence award at such an event is a larger accomplishment.

Excellence awards at robotics events are given after interviews of team members and a review of their notes showing the design process, the science and the work behind the project.

Building and winning

"I am very proud that our 8th-graders have the level of documentation, engineering design process knowledge and are able to articulate that to win," Ms. Muggeo said.

The excitement among those on the team is now boiling over as they think about showcasing their work and learning from others on the national level.

“They’re excited, and I feel like we have to work to get them there,” Ms. Muggeo said.

The state-level competition will be held Saturday, March 10 at Dutch Fork High School in Irmo. The VEX CREATE US Open Robotics Competition runs April 2 - April 4. The team hopes to raise $6,000 but March 1 to help fund the trip.
