Sponsor a child for Berkeley ONEderland

Published on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2021

Berkeley County School District’s team of social workers often wear many hats, but during the holidays they don two additional personas: Santa Claus, and his elves.

The school district is currently welcoming residents to sponsor its most at-risk students through the Berkeley ONEderland program.

Similar to the Angel Tree program, Berkeley ONEderland is a holiday gift drive that started in 2016 to further assist the district’s homeless population. Since 2016, the district has brought some extra holiday cheer to nearly 300 homeless students.

General gift donations will go toward the students who are being sponsored this year. BCSD’s social workers will later take on the role of becoming the district’s “elves” by wrapping any additional presents, and then each of them will become “Santa Claus” by delivering the gifts to the children.

Elaine Swain, director of student and family support for BCSD, said this is an initiative that the district’s social worker team loves to do every year.

“I believe it represents the mission and values of our school district,” she said. “We are here to support our students and families every day. Berkeley Onederland is a win-win initiative.”

Participants will be provided a list of items that a student needs, as well as his or her wish-list items, once they sign up to be a sponsor. Please contact Renee Elvis at 843-899-8514 for student wish lists.

Residents are further encouraged to help by donating more general donation items such as Amazon gift cards, video game or technology APP cards (such as Google Play or iTunes), grocery or local restaurant gift cards, or unwrapped toys/clothing for children in kindergarten through 12th-grade.

The district is also accepting clothing donations for the homeless closet.

All donations must be dropped off to the district’s Office of Student and Family Support in the BEC annex building located at 107 E Main Street in Moncks Corner. Donations need to be dropped off by 4 p.m. on Dec. 15. Please bring all student gifts wrapped and labeled with sponsor gift tags bundled in a large bag or box.

Any questions, contact Swain or Renee Elvis at 843-899-8514.
