Senior artists from Cane Bay and Philip Simmons High recently scored some monetary prizes and scholarships in the Charleston Artist Guild's 2023 High School Senior Art Exhibition.
Tri-county high school seniors enrolled in art programs were invited to participate in this year’s virtual exhibit. Seventy-nine entries from eight area high schools were submitted and judged. All Award winners will receive a free one-year membership to the Guild, with all the benefits associated.
Among the Ribbon Award Winners, Cane Bay High’s Myla Goettsch won first place, and $300, for her acrylic piece, “Daydream.”
Kacie Schrecengot won third place, and $75, for her charcoal piece, “Humble Reflection.”
Jackson Brindle received an Honorable Mention, and $50, for his work, “Walk This Way,” which he made with paint markers.
Philip Simmons High’s Isabella Corbit and Riley Woolridge each won a $2,000 scholarship funded by the New Jersey Foundation, specifically on behalf of the Mello-Hill Charitable Fund. “Wrapped” by Corbit and “Sea Legs” by Woolridge were both done in colored pencil.
In addition, Izzy Tumey received a $2,000 Fay Sullivan Art Scholarship for her colored pencil piece, “Ice Fisherman.” This scholarship is funded by donations from family and friends of the late Faye Sullivan, an accomplished artist and longtime member of the Charleston Artist Guild.
Michaela Hughes’s artwork, “The Forest of Man”, also done in colored pencil, earned her a $1,000 Martin Ahrens Scholarship, sponsored by local well-known art instructor, Joyce Hall.
