The Cobra Wrestling Team had a great showing on Friday and Saturday in Anderson.  Junior JJ Peace completed his 3rd consecutive undefeated season with his 3rd consecutive 5A State Championships, this time at the 120lb weight class.  JJ pinned Coby Cortese of Hillcrest in the quarterfinals, then pinned Jackson Chance of Dorman in the semifinals.  The finals JJ won by tech fall 21-5 over Ayden Whisler of Boiling Springs.  JJ ends the season 39-0 and will head into his senior season with an 87-0 record.  JJ was named 5A Most Outstanding Wrestler for the State Championships.

The Cobras had nine other wrestlers that earned the right to compete in Anderson.  Senior Ben Newton finished 3rd in the State at 195.  Ben defeated Storm Judy of Berkeley to win the consolation bracket.  Freshman Tyson Schirmer finished 4th in the State at 126lb.  Other state qualifiers were:  Jared Tyson at 145, Colin Mueller at 170, Jaden Ussery at 182 and Andrew Tumbleston at 285.  Newton and Ussery are seniors, but the rest of these qualifiers will return in 2023-24.

The SCHSL also hosted the 1st ever Girls State Wrestling Championships.  The Cobras had three wrestlers compete in the tournament.  Sophomore Madeline Bowlin finished 2nd in the State at 113lbs.  She went 4-1 in the tournament, but fell short to eventual champion Aajia Jones of Greenwood by a 3-2 decision.  Riley Williams and Lillian Hamas also competed in the tournament.

We are so proud of wrestling program and all that they accomplished this season.  We are already looking forward to what is in store for the 2023-24 season!!!!
