BMC learning pathway selection information

Published Wednesday, July 22, 2020

The BMC staff has been working hard to make plans for the upcoming school year.  Please make note of the following updates.

Every returning student must have their parent complete the Online Returning Student Update with proofs of residency, parent I.D., contact information and learning pathway choice. (Parents will receive a survey to complete regarding pathway selection. If you do not receive that survey, please email Dr. Smith.)

BMC will offer two pathways for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year

  • The first option is a virtual pathway comprised of courses registered through Virtual SC and Berkeley County Virtual Learning Program (these courses are taught by teachers across the state and district and include additional registration).
  • The second option is a hybrid-learning model.  Students will attend class in person two days a week and be required to attend virtual classes through google Meets or another platform three days a week during the scheduled class time.  Due to TTC guidelines, students are required to wear masks on campus at all times and follow social distancing guidelines throughout the school day.  Classrooms are organized to meet social distancing guidelines.

Berkeley Middle College Virtual Pathway

Students will be enrolled in BCVLP courses for first semester.  Students will be encouraged to enroll in the courses needed to complete high school graduation including, but not limited to: US History, Gov’t/Econ, English III, English IV, Earth Science, Forensic Science, and Environmental Science.  Students who need Chemistry, Physics, Pre-Calculus, and Algebra II will be encouraged to take in person classes second semester with BMC staff if the student is able to return to school.  If the student is not able to return to school, then BMC administration and counseling services will work with the students to enroll in these classes through Virtual SC.  Students may be concurrently enrolled in college classes through TTC.

Berkeley Middle College Hybrid Learning Pathway

Berkeley Middle College will follow TTC guidelines and restrictions for social distancing and the wearing of masks on campus.  In order to meet TTC guidelines, BMC will operate on an A/B schedule minimizing the number of students in a classroom with a teacher.  One cohort of students will attend school on Monday and Thursday for a regular school day.  The second cohort of students will attend school on Tuesday and Thursday for a regular school day.  Rooms 174 and 172 are available for class sizes up to 14 students.  Rooms 170 and 168 are available for class sizes up to 11 students.  Daily lessons will be livestreamed via Google Meets or another platform.  Students will be required to attend the classes virtually on their “home days” during their scheduled class times.  Daily attendance will be taken in each class. All assessments will be taken in class with a teacher and science labs will be completed in class as well.

The Hybrid Learning Pathway allows for any juniors or seniors to come to campus from 3:00 PM- 4:00 PM to utilize TTC internet access for online classes.  BMC staff will identify any seniors who need support and assign an Academic Enrichment class period on Wednesday for any seniors or juniors falling behind.  All TTC classes will be online first semester.  BMC teachers will be available for tutoring during their planning on Wednesday as well as Monday-Friday from 3:00-4:00 PM.  Seniors may also make appointments during the day to utilize a study space or access TTC wireless internet.  Students will be able to order lunch Monday-Friday and pick it up on their “home” days.

Mandatory Junior Orientation August 19, 2020 9:00 AM- 12:00 PM (Students will be in groups of 10 and seating arrangements will meet social distancing guidelines.  Masks must be worn).  All BMC Students will attend orientation.  We will accommodate a small group of students on August 20, 2020 if requested.  Box Lunches will be provided.

Mandatory Parent Zoom Meeting August 20, 2020 7:00 PM.  The link will be sent at a later date.
