Daniel Island School - Elementary Visual Arts Department
Welcome to Elementary Art at Daniel Island School! I am looking forward to working with you and your son/daughter this year. I want your child to have the best art program in the safest environment. My goals for the year are to introduce and show students how to; use the elements of art and the principles of design as a foundation for exploring visual arts concepts and processes, utilize reading, writing and math to explore art concepts and facilitate ideas, values, beliefs and communicate them through visual arts.
Since all students enter visual arts with many diverse abilities, experiences and exposure, the visual arts curriculum is flexible and may be expanded or compacted to meet the needs of the individual learner. As a result of leaning in the visual arts, students will become critical thinkers able to creatively solve problems using their knowledge and intuitive interpretations. They should be able to exercise flexibility in thought and work successfully with others while still retaining confidence in their own individual strengths.
In order to be successful in attaining our goals the following expectations will be in place:
- Students will arrive prepared to learn - all bathroom breaks taken prior to arrival.
- Students will respect the teacher, themselves, fellow classmates, and the art materials.
- Students will be in their assigned seat/rug in order to receive instructions to ensure the best quality artwork and provide the safest working environment.
- Students will have rotating duties to ensure all supplies, materials and artwork are returned to their proper places and in good condition.
The first few weeks will be spent going over these expectations with all students. Since we only meet once a week it is important for students to develop routines to maximize work time. I will contact parents via email if there are any issues with not meeting expectations and together we can workout a solution.
3rd & 4th grade students will be using sketchbooks this year. They will be required to complete independent assignments throughout the year and will be assessed at the end of each quarter.
I am excited to being the new year and look forward to getting to know your son/daughter. If you ever have any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to email or call me.
Thank you for this opportunity to introduce the visual arts to your child!
