Welcome to Mr. Atkins Theatre Class
The theatre program at Philip Simmons Middle School is designed to introduce young people to a good work ethic while developing body, voice, imagination, concentration and cooperation. Theatre learning tasks are aligned with South Carolina College and Career Ready Standards for Visual and Performing Arts Proficiency Standards. Three annual theatre performances include: performing a holiday musical production with Philip Simmons Elementary 4th grade, performing a one-act play for the South Carolina Theatre Association Theatre for Youth Festival in April and a Spring production in May. Theatre learning tasks include but are not limited to: playwriting, acting, stage design, directing, researching, and theatre history. Being an Arts in Basic Curriculum school we also conduct two week-long theatre residencies with approved South Carolina Arts Commission theatre artists each school year. Being a South Carolina Department of Education Distinguished Arts Program Grant school each student at our school attends two theatrical productions at the historic Dock Street Theatre downtown.
