Wellness Practices

  • Sangaree Elementary is committed to providing a school environment that promotes and protects children’s health, well-being, and ability to learn by facilitating healthy eating and physical activity. Therefore, the following practices have been established:

    • All students in grades K-2 will have opportunities, support, and encouragement to be physically active on a regular basis.
    • To the maximum extent practical, meals, foods and beverages served at school will be consistent with the nutrition recommendations of the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
    • To the maximum extent practical, Sangaree will participate in available federal school meal programs, including the School Breakfast Program and the National School Lunch Program.
    • Sangaree will provide nutrition education and physical education (as required by the Student Health and Fitness Act, 2005) to foster lifelong habits of healthy eating and physical activity.

    Nutrition Education Goals

    • Foods and beverages served and offered to students during the school day meet or exceed the USDA’s Smart Snacks in School nutrition standards.

    *Students are provided access to water fountains to fill water bottles and allowed to be drank in classrooms.

    Physical Activity

    • Students in grades K-2 will have a minimum 60 minutes of PE.
    • A certified physical education teacher will be designated to coordinate the physical activity at each school. (SH&FA)
    • Integration of physical activity is encouraged across curricula and throughout the day. Movement can be made a part of science, math, social studies and language arts.
    • The school will provide a physical and social environment that encourages safe and enjoyable activity for all students.
    • Teachers and school staff will not use physical activity (e.g., running laps, pushups) or withhold opportunities for physical activity (e.g., recess, physical education) as punishment.
    • All students in grades K-2 will have opportunities, support, and encouragement to be physically active on a regular basis by having opportunities to participate in physical activity breaks in classrooms outside of physical education, recess, and class transition periods on all days during a typical school week. (e.g., brain breaks, energizers, classroom activity breaks, etc.)
    • The school promotes and supports walking and bicycling to and/or from school.


    Meal Time and Scheduling: 

    • Students will be provided at least 15 minutes to eat after sitting down for breakfast and 25 minutes after sitting down for lunch (SH&FA);


    Sangaree strives towards a monthly birthday celebration where all the birthdays that month are celebrated on the same day and are not recognized with a food option or unhealthy foods. Sangaree strives to promote wellness where classroom achievements are not celebrated with food but a book of choice and pencil.

    *Students will not receive food as rewards or given the opportunity to earn unhealthy foods for celebrations.

    Setting Goals for Other School-Based Activities Designed to Promote Student Wellness

    • Sangaree strives to prohibit use of food as a reward or punishment.
    • Sangaree strives to prohibit denial of student participation in recess or other physical activity as a form of discipline, or cancellation of recess or other physical activity time for instructional make-up time.
    • Sangaree strives to ensure fundraising efforts are supportive of healthy eating.
    • Sangaree strives to develop careers exploration opportunities in health related fields.

    Breastfeeding in the Workplace

    Sangaree provides a workplace environment and organizational culture that supports breastfeeding in order to enable the mother and child to experience the full benefits of breastfeeding. A private room is designated for breastfeeding employees and may be utilized at the discretion of the employee’s needs.
